Na'alehu is about 65 miles southwest of Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. It has the southernmost post office in the United States, and the village of Honu'apo, on the coast below this parcel, was well settled by Hawaiians from about 1400-1600 A.D. An ancient fish pond still exists, although it was modified after the arrival of Westerners, and would have provided some of the sustenance for the population. Sweet potato, taro, wauke (paper mulberry, used to make kapa), coconuts and bananas were grown in the area.
Na'alehu became the headquarters of the Na'alehu Plantation, one of the oldest, and the southernmost, sugar plantations in Hawaii. During the plantation period, the natural port was enlarged to accommodate vessels large enough to sail across the Pacific, and much of the land was converted to sugar cane fields. Once a bustling port and sugar mill town, Naalehu has since relaxed into a quiet, laid back community, with basic amenities.
