Mauna Loa Eruption, November 29, 2022, Photo by Chris Reed
|
I'm sure just about everyone on the planet has heard that Mauna Loa is erupting.
There are no signs of an eruption where I live-no glow, no smell, no shaking, no noise. I did not know the eruption had started until I read the news.
The glow of the lava is visible from Waimea town, and at the moment it is pretty easy to get close to the lava from Waimea. If the lava crosses the saddle road, the County will almost certainly restrict access for traffic safety reasons.
Those keen for more information might want to check here.
Here is a map depicting the lava zones on the Big Island.

In the last 30 days, we've had 44 new listings in my primary service area - Honokaa, Waimea, Kohala Ranch, Mauna Kea Resort, Mauna Lani Resort, Waikoloa Resort, Waikoloa Village, and Waikii Ranch. In that same period we've had 29 properties sell, and 30 properties drop in price.
It's a pretty balanced market at the moment, but I'm hearing from buyers now, whereas it was pretty quiet for a while.
I don't predict the market-I'm no good at it. But I wouldn't be surprised to see much more activity in the near future.

KTA Grocery Store!
Like most other businesses in town, KTA is struggling to keep enough staff to operate . I have always preferred KTA because they support and encourage local food producers, even though that, too has been difficult lately. Farmers have are having a very hard time finding workers, and are cutting back on production.
The KTA staff pulled out all the stops the day before Thanksgiving! The store was fully stocked, the staff were bustling around restocking, and everything seemed to be working with great cheer and efficiency. I applaud them all!

* 13 of the 50 major US housing markets surveyed saw an inventory DECREASE in October...…most of them - about 70% - were on the East Coast.
* About 60% of Vienna's residents live in homes that are either owned by the city government or by state-subsidized non-profit cooperatives. Vienna consistently ranks as a top quality-of-life city. Of the 1.9 million people living in Vienna, about 2,000 are homeless.
* Homeowner equity peaked at $11.5 trillion collectively last May, after home prices jumped 45% since the start of the pandemic. About $1.5 trillion has eroded since then.... Borrowers who bought their homes before the pandemic collectively have $5 trillion more than they did before the pandemic hit. (CNBC)
* 10 US states have gas selling for under $3.20/gallon. Texas is $2.95.....Hawaii is $5.20....76% higher!
* Joshua Riccio, a Hawaii Department of Transportation Airports Division firefighter recruit, used a pediatric oxygen mask to resuscitate Ceci, a pet female cat that was overcome by smoke in a house fire in Keaukaha in November. Firefighters were able to save Ceci and most of the home.
* In October, only 16% of consumers surveyed said now is a good time to buy a home - the lowest number on record.
* The first new major exhibit at Iolani Palace in decades, expected to open in 2024, will present the history of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
* If you can, take a look at "Do You Really Want a New Kitchen Counter", by Amanda Mull, in The Atlantic. I've never understood the desire to keep up with the latest trends, so I found the article very comforting :-).
* New US homes are about 1,000 square feet larger than they were in 1973, and living space per person has nearly doubled.
